Enjoy an extended range with this 13 Note Tongue Drum. Its alternating numbered guides offer fluid and intuitive playing.

The 13 Note Tongue Drum is a percussion instrument from the idiophone family, which means that the body of the instrument itself produces the sound when it is struck.

A 13-note model features thirteen tongue-shaped cut-outs on its upper surface.

Each tongue has a very specific size: the larger it is, the lower the sound; the smaller it is, the higher the sound.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF A 13 NOTE TONGUE DRUM?

The 13 Note Tongue Drum clearly distinguishes itself from smaller versions (with 8 or 11 notes) through several technical and musical aspects:

  • A wider range (more than 1.5 octaves): With 13 notes, the instrument is not limited to a single octave. It generally covers a full octave plus a few additional low and high notes. This allows for the playing of much more complex and varied melodies.

  • The diatonic scale: Based on a C Major diatonic scale, the instrument includes all natural notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) distributed across different octaves, opening up a wide choice of tunes.

  • An intuitive layout by numbers: To make learning easier, each tongue is engraved with a number (from 1 to 7) corresponding to a musical note. A dot located below the number indicates a low note, whilst a dot above indicates a high note. The notes are distributed in a way that naturally alternates between the left hand and the right hand, making playing fluid, logical and accessible to beginners from the very first minutes.

  • A rich and harmonious sound: Thanks to its 13 tongues, the volume of air inside the steel cavity resonates in a very rich manner. When you strike a note, the other tongues vibrate slightly in sympathy, creating an enveloping, almost mystical soundscape.

  • Versatility of use: It offers an excellent compromise. It remains completely accessible to beginners (there are no "wrong notes" if you stay in the key), whilst offering enough material for experienced musicians to compose or interpret well-known tunes.

You can play it either with mallets (the rubber-tipped sticks provided) to obtain a powerful and crystalline sound, or directly with your fingers (or silicone finger rings) for a softer, more muffled touch that is ideal for meditation or yoga.
