The Flat Kalimba (or solid board kalimba) is a sleek musical instrument crafted from a single block of solid mahogany wood.

Unlike hollow-box models, it completely eliminates the problem of muffled high notes, ensuring an even resonance across all of its tines.

To understand the acoustic architecture of the solid board is essential for a beginner musician. This model from the Gecko brand relies on the flat board principle, an acoustic approach radically different from the traditional kalimba with a resonant box.

On hollow kalimbas, the shortest tines located on the outer edges often lack body. The box does not have the required air volume to amplify these very high frequencies, which produces a dry and muffled sound.
